Dangerous car and irresponsible owner – NOT recommended!
We rented a car from Shpati Rent A Car, listed on the rentfromlocals platform — and it was the worst rental experience we’ve ever had.
From the first moment, we saw problems:
The key didn’t work properly — the owner had to immediately change the battery. Then we found out:
• The USB port for phone charging didn’t work, despite what the owner said.
• The rear right door wouldn’t open.
• The tires were dangerously worn out and started deflating in the heat.
• The engine was making strange noises, and on highways, the car would suddenly lose power and stall, dropping from 100–120 km/h to 30–40 km/h. The engine warning light was constantly on.
The most terrifying part happened inside a tunnel:
A piece of plastic protection from the bumper broke off while driving and flew at our windshield, and a hose carrying antifreeze came loose and flew through the driver’s window, almost hitting my face or eyes. This could’ve caused a serious crash.
We repeatedly contacted the owner, but his reaction was shocking — aggressive and dismissive:
“It’s fine, just keep driving, it’s a small issue.”
He refused to replace the car, saying it wasn’t possible. Only after strong pressure did he agree to change the bald tires — and that’s it.
Communication was horrible. Instead of support, we received blame and shouting.
I do NOT recommend Shpati Rent A Car.
Even if you book through rentfromlocals and choose full insurance, it won’t protect you from a careless owner and a dangerous car.

Propriétaire de la voiture arrivé avec 45 minutes de retard. Pas aimable, la voiture n'était pas celle commandée au départ, mais correct. Des voyants oranges (au moins 3) se sont allumés au cours du road trip. Voiture plutôt confortable et suffisamment puissante.

I'm sorry if your experience wasn't quite what you expected. I'd like to clarify a few things: the reservation was made for airport pickup, but at the last minute we were asked to drop off the car at a hotel about 20 minutes away. This created a delay, and despite our best efforts to be on time, the situation got out of hand.
Also, sorry if I didn't seem friendly - I was under pressure due to the unexpected changes and the stress of a busy schedule.
The car was in good working order and clean, and I apologize for the warning lights.
The car condition was as expected for the price.
Quite many things did not work properly - control of left window, trunk hydraulic supports, belt got unfasten randomly, the car was shaking in higher speeds.
We were on the edge of satisfaction, however, we expect this condition also with other cars in Albania so we had true Balkan experience. :)

è andato tutto bene, due giorni prima del ritiro l' auto scelta non era disponibile per un guasto ma il noleggiatore si è attivato per un alternativa e ci ha trovato la tipologia di auto ( cabrio ) che avevamo scelto, grazie a presto

Première voiture tombe en panne j’ai attendu plusieurs heures pour avoir une autres !! Je vous déconseille , voiture en très mauvais états bruit moteur , clim qui fonctionne pas , kilométrage supérieur aux 200 000 km , odeur de cigarette et j’en passe le loueur est un voleur il vous loue la voiture pas cher mais en fin de location il trouve un lproblème pour vous faire payer plus , j’ai dû ajouter 500 euros car garé au mauvais endroit il n’as pas hésité a appeler la police et bien évidement les policiers sont de mèche avec eux … les seuls bon avis qu’il a ce sont les locaux si vous êtes en visite au pays fuyez le !!!!!
